Dr. Orgen Visits Chief Justice of Ghana

Later in the day, Dr. Orgen met with the Chief Justice of Ghana at the Supreme Court in Accra. This meeting highlighted the intersection between mental health, leadership, and justice.

Dr. Orgen presented Dealing with ADHD to the Chief Justice, emphasizing the importance of mental health literacy within the judiciary.

Discussions focused on the impact of untreated ADHD and other mental health conditions on individuals’ interactions with the justice system, particularly in matters of juvenile justice and family law.

The Chief Justice expressed gratitude for Dr. Orgen’s advocacy and pledged to explore avenues to incorporate mental health training for judicial staff.

Ghana’s Judiciary and Judicial Service

Justice Torkornoo has held a variety of important roles throughout her impressive career. Within the Judicial Training Institute, she has been both a faculty and a board member. Her involvement extends to serving as the vice chair of the Internship and Clerkship Committee, and taking on leadership as the Chair of the E-Justice Oversight Committee. Her expertise is further acknowledged through her role as Chair of the Editorial Committee for the Association of Magistrates and Judges. In addition, she has contributed significantly as the Supervising Judge for Commercial Courts in her country, and she has been a Law Reform Commissioner.

Justice Torkornoo dedicated 17 years to her career as a barrister, from 1987 until she transitioned to the Judiciary in 2004. During that time, her focus was on Commercial and Construction law.

Justice Torkornoo‘s rise through the judicial ranks began with her promotion to the Court of Appeal in 2012. Subsequently, she advanced to the Supreme Court in December 2019, following a Parliamentary hearing process.

Justice Torkornoo played a foundational role as one of the initial Justices contributing to the establishment and development of the Commercial Division of the High Court. Her involvement was pivotal in shaping the division’s early function and operations.

Justice Torkornoo has a family that includes her spouse, four daughters, and three grandchildren.

Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo stepped into her role as the Chief Justice of Ghana on June 12, 2023. Her appointment came after a nomination by the President, followed by a thorough vetting process conducted by the Parliament.
