The Last Day of December 2024
By Dr. David Rex Orgen, Bestselling Author and Global Mental Health Advocate
As December 2024 comes to a close, I pause to reflect on the remarkable journey I’ve had this year, spanning several nations and cultures. From Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa to Germany, Jamaica, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Rwanda, and Abidjan, I have witnessed firsthand the progress, challenges, and breakthroughs in the global mental health landscape. Each of these countries has its unique strengths and struggles, but what unites them all is the shared understanding that mental health is not only a personal concern but a collective responsibility.
2024: A Year of Global Connections
This year has been one of profound global connections. In Rwanda, the focus on community-based mental health initiatives has made remarkable strides, demonstrating how a collective approach can heal wounds from the past and build a healthier future. Similarly, in Abidjan, there has been an increasing recognition of the importance of mental wellness, particularly in schools and workplaces, as the city embraces more comprehensive mental health strategies.
Nigeria continues to break barriers in mental health awareness, driven by youth-led initiatives that challenge stigma and promote accessibility to care. Ghana is making significant strides by integrating mental health awareness into public policy, with schools and work environments now prioritizing mental wellness. South Africa remains a leader in mental health advocacy in Africa, with an emphasis on community-based services and support for vulnerable populations.
In Germany, the healthcare system’s integration of mental health within general well-being has set an example for other nations. Meanwhile, Jamaica has created a growing dialogue around mental health, supported by initiatives that provide both education and direct access to care for individuals in need.
The Philippines has been at the forefront of addressing mental health challenges, particularly with its focus on youth. Increased government efforts to raise awareness and provide services are creating spaces where individuals, especially the younger generation, can seek help and speak openly about their struggles. Hong Kong, with its rapidly changing environment, has begun to recognize the need for systemic reform to address stress and anxiety across all age groups.
Lessons from 2024
Reflecting on the year, I ask myself:
What bridges have we built? Through book tours, workshops, and collaborations, this year has taught me the importance of shared effort. The conversations I’ve had across these countries have emphasized how mental health is a global concern that requires collective action.
What lessons have we learned? The key lesson this year has been that mental health must be addressed in context. Different regions have different needs, and successful mental health strategies must be locally adapted to account for cultural, economic, and social factors.
Resolutions for 2025
As we move into 2025, my goals remain focused on:
- Strengthening partnerships across nations. I am committed to deepening my efforts in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Germany, Jamaica, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Rwanda, and Abidjan. By building on the work we’ve done this year, I hope to provide tailored mental health resources and further empower local leaders to champion mental wellness in their communities.
- Expanding educational initiatives. Through InspireMind Global, I will continue to push forward with mental health education, offering scholarships, providing training programs, and raising awareness about the importance of self-care, compassion, and community support.
- Encouraging more open conversations. A major focus for 2025 will be engaging governments, faith-based organizations, and schools to create safe spaces for discussing mental health openly. As we break the stigma, we can build stronger, more compassionate communities that are better equipped to address the needs of individuals facing mental health challenges.
A Global Call to Action
As 2024 concludes and we look forward to 2025, I challenge each of us to think about how we can contribute to the global mental health movement. Whether it’s by offering a kind word to someone struggling, advocating for policies that prioritize mental wellness, or simply listening without judgment, every action we take can help foster a more supportive world.
The last day of December is a moment to reflect, but also a time to renew our commitment to the cause of mental health and wellness. Let’s step into 2025 with hope, compassion, and a shared determination to make a lasting difference in the lives of those who need it most.
