Addiction Often Begins With Hidden Pain

Many people think drug use starts because someone wants to have fun or make bad choices. But for many people, addiction begins with pain they do not know how to express.

Some use drugs to escape anxiety, trauma, rejection, loneliness, depression, or emotional stress. Others use substances to feel accepted, calm, confident, or emotionally numb. Dr. David Rex Orgen explains that drugs may bring short-term relief, but they often cause deeper harm to mental and physical health.

When Escape Becomes Dependence

What begins as a way to cope can slowly become dependence. Drugs affect decision-making, emotional control, sleep, memory, focus, relationships, and mental stability. Families suffer. Friendships break. Dreams are delayed. Some people lose themselves while trying to escape emotional pain.

Many people struggling with substance abuse still appear normal in public. They may go to work, attend school, smile, and socialize while silently fighting a private battle.

Dr. Orgen reminds communities that addiction should not be met with judgment alone. It must also be met with understanding, accountability, treatment, support, and honest healing conversations.

Healing is possible. Recovery is possible. Hope is still possible.

If you or someone you know is struggling with drugs, emotional pain, or mental health challenges, do not suffer in silence. Speak to someone. Seek help early. One honest conversation can begin a new chapter of healing.
