Are You the Role Model Your Children Need?

“Children may not always listen to what you say, but they rarely fail to notice how you live.”

A successful businessman once declared proudly, “I built a multi million-dollar company from nothing.”

Then someone asked him, “Would your children want to build a life like yours?”

The room fell silent.

He had taught thousands of people about business, yet he had never considered whether his own children admired the life he was living.

Dr. David Rex Orgen believes one of the most painful realities a parent can face is discovering that their children look elsewhere for role models. The immediate reaction may be to blame social media, celebrities, friends, or modern culture. Although these influences are real, they do not always tell the whole story.

Sometimes parents must confront a more difficult question: What have my children consistently seen in me?

Children Learn From the Life You Live

Children inherit more than their parent’s names. They observe their character.

They notice whether promises are kept. They remember how their parents treated each other. They watch how adults respond to disappointment, success, money, conflict, and failure.

Ultimately, children learn far more from a parent’s lifestyle than from lectures.

From a psychological perspective, children naturally admire people who demonstrate authenticity, consistency, emotional safety, and genuine interest in them. Respect cannot be demanded simply because someone is a parent. It grows through trust, presence, and example.

Presence Matters as Much as Provision

Many parents have worked tirelessly to give their children better lives, and that sacrifice deserves recognition. However, children often remember more than what was provided materially.

They remember who attended their school events, listened without judging, apologized after making mistakes, made time for conversations, celebrated their achievements, and helped them feel seen.

Ephesians 6:4 reminds us:

“Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”

This instruction highlights the importance of nurturing relationships alongside parental authority.

Ask yourself honestly: Do my children know my success more than they know my heart? Have I invested as much in our relationship as I have in my career? Do I model the values I expect them to follow? Would I choose myself as a role model if I were in their position?

These questions are not intended to create guilt. They are invitations to grow.

Become the Example They Need

It is never too late to become the example your children need. You cannot change yesterday, but you can shape tomorrow through humility, consistency, and intentional love.

The greatest inheritance you can leave your children is not a house, business, or bank account. It is the kind of person they hope to become because they watched you.

Your children do not need a perfect parent. They need a parent whose life is worth following.
