Before You Say Yes to an International Marriage

“Love can cross borders, but wisdom must guide the journey.”

Mary, not her real name, met a kind and caring man who lived in another country. They spoke every day, shared dreams about their future, and soon became engaged.

She believed love was enough. After they married, however, reality set in.

They disagreed about money, family expectations, religion, raising children, and where they would live. Their different nationalities were not the real problem. The deeper issue was that they had never taken the time to understand each other’s values before making a lifelong commitment.

Many international marriages become beautiful success stories because both partners learn to understand and respect each other’s cultures. Others struggle because essential conversations never happen before the wedding.

Before saying “yes,” every woman should slow down and ask the right questions.

Does He Respect Me?

Real love is demonstrated through respect, patience, and honesty. Control, manipulation, and intimidation are not signs of a healthy relationship.

Pay attention to how he responds when you disagree, establish boundaries, or express concerns. Respect should be present even during difficult conversations.

Do I Know the Real Person?

It is easy to fall in love with the version of someone presented online or during short visits. Marriage often reveals the person behind that carefully managed impression.

Take time to observe his character in different situations. Notice how he handles disappointment, responsibility, conflict, and pressure.

Have We Discussed the Important Issues?

Talk openly about children, finances, religion, careers, family responsibilities, where you will live, and the roles each person expects to have in the marriage.

These conversations may feel uncomfortable, but they cannot wait until after the wedding. Honest discussion now can prevent painful misunderstandings later.

Have I Met the People Closest to Him?

Whenever possible, meet his family, friends, and others who know him well. The people closest to someone can often reveal aspects of their character that romantic conversations do not.

Their relationships may also help you understand the family expectations and cultural traditions that could influence your marriage.

Am I Ignoring Warning Signs?

Loneliness, excitement, or the dream of living abroad can sometimes cause a person to overlook troubling behavior. Warning signs that appear small before marriage may become serious problems afterward.

From a psychological perspective, romantic feelings can lead people to minimize concerns they would normally recognize. This is why careful observation, honest conversations, and guidance from trusted people are essential before making a lifelong decision.

Proverbs 15:22 reminds us:

“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”

Marriage is not simply the joining of two hearts. It is the joining of two families, two cultures, two ways of thinking, and two futures.

The strongest marriages are not built on emotion alone. They are built on trust, communication, mutual respect, shared values, and a willingness to grow together.

If a relationship is meant to last a lifetime, it should be able to survive honest questions before the wedding. Never allow the excitement of a proposal to silence the wisdom of preparation.

Take your time. Ask the difficult questions. Seek wise counsel.

Saying “yes” to the right person begins long before the wedding day.
